An alcohol ignition interlock may go by several names but it performs the same job. Some people refer to the device as an interlock ignition. Others call it an interlock breathalyzer. The formal name is ignition interlock device. All of these terms refer to a device that is essentially an alcohol testing unit that is connected to your car and it prevents you from driving under the influence.
At Smart Start of Oregon, our alcohol ignition interlock device is as small as a cellular phone. This interlock breathalyzer is affixed to the steering column on your vehicle and it blends in nicely with your dashboard. Our state-of-the-art interlock ignitions aren’t bulky or cumbersome, so you can feel comfortable having our car breathalyzers in your vehicle.
Our car breathalyzers are extremely user-friendly! In order to get your car to start, you must take a breath test to ensure that your breath alcohol level is within an acceptable range for driving. If your breath alcohol content (BrAC) is below .029, your engine will start normally and you are free to drive. If your BrAC is above .029, your engine will be “locked” for a period of time. In other words, your car will not start until you are able to provide a clean breath sample. Alcohol ignition interlock devices keep you safe and help ensure the safety of others on the road.
Interlock breathalyzer devices maintain your safety while you are driving as well. Any time that you are operating your vehicle, you will be asked to take periodic “rolling breath tests” to make certain that your BrAC is still within the allowable limit. You can easily take these rolling tests by simply breathing into your interlock ignition device. You don’t need to take your eyes from the road. At Smart Start of Oregon, we understand that some people feel more comfortable pulling over to take a breath test. There is a six-minute window of time in which you can take the test, so you can always find a safe place on the side of the road. If you fail a rolling test, your engine will not shut down, however it will record the failed test in the data history of your alcohol ignition interlock device. Remember, your data history is downloaded monthly and sent to the authorities, so it is important to provide clean breath samples.
It is illegal and highly difficult to tamper with an interlock breathalyzer. Tampering with an alcohol ignition interlock system is also punishable. Feel free to ask any questions that you may have about how your device works at your monthly calibration appointment!
